Getting Started as a New User

Brand new to Insight Engine™ and need to know where to start?

Updated over a week ago

Congrats! You are now an Insight Engine™ user, but now what? How do you get started?

There are tons of complex searches you can perform with this simple dashboard, but maybe you don’t know what you are looking for yet. Our Trending tab, Watch Lists, and Keyword search are great starting points.

Let’s start with the Trending tab.

Think of Trending as a bill or docket crowdsourcing feature. It allows you to examine what other users across the industry consider important. These are the dockets or bills our users are adding to their favorites so they can keep a closer eye on them, which means those things could be relevant to you as well. Bills and dockets that are trending will have this symbol:

Another amazing resource for new users is our Watch Lists.

Watch Lists are curated lists put together by our policy experts. While not meant to be exhaustive, these lists are comprised of a wide range of topics that are significant to our users. Policy experts have done some of the heavy lifting for you to identify those dockets and bills they believe will be most impactful, which means that you can skim thru and read the summaries, called Insights, to see what might be significant to you. A docket that has an Insight will have this symbol:

As you identify bills or dockets that are of interest, simply add them to your favorites by clicking the star to the right. You will receive an email notification whenever there are updates to bills or dockets you have favorited.

Lastly, you can take advantage of the Keyword search. You can look for specific dockets or bills by number or search organizations or individuals that may be involved in the proceedings of interest. Insight Engine™ allows users to start broad and then narrow results down by search scope, state, or latest filing date. If you want to understand more about how to get the most out of the keyword search, check out our article here.

In the docket section, the search scope menu allows you to look for a word or phrase anywhere it might appear within the text (All Content).

You can also limit the scope by searching for a word or phrase only where it appears in the title, description, or party. If you know the docket number, you can select that option and then type the number in the keyword word field. Lastly, you can search by major parties, which means if there is an organization involved in the proceeding(s) you are interested in, simply select this option, and then type the organization name in the keyword field and search.

Not finding what you are looking for? Please use our intercom chat feature at the bottom right of the page and our team is happy to assist.

In summary, Insight Engine™ is a powerful and complex tool that covers all the activity coming out FERC, the PUC’s, US Congress, and State Legislatures. It can be a bit intimidating to know where to start, but by taking advantage of our Trending tab, Watch Lists, and utilizing our Keyword search and Intercom feature you’ll be an expert user in no time.
